Team Cross-Country: Score by Place
A cross-country race around the school grounds where each team adds up the finishing places of its top four runners and the lowest total wins, just like real cross-country scoring. Students build endurance, pick a pace on varied ground, and learn that every runner matters.
How to play
- Mark a 400 to 600 m loop with cones that uses gentle hills, grass and turns, with a finish chute at the end (set up before class).
- Make 5 teams of 5 in colored pinnies and walk the course together, pointing out turns and tough sections (4 min).
- Explain scoring: at the finish, each runner picks up a card with their place in the chute; the team adds the cards of its top four (2 min).
- Race 1: mass start and 2 laps of the loop; the teacher hands out place cards in order in the chute (6 min).
- Walking recovery and count: each team adds its four cards and the standings are read aloud (3 min).
- Race 2 is one "pack" lap: all five teammates must finish within 10 seconds of each other; scoring is the same, plus a 10-point penalty if they miss (7 min).
Rules
- Stay outside every cone; cutting the course adds 5 places to the card.
- Keep your order in the finish chute and do not pass there.
- Anyone who feels unwell raises a hand and walks to the edge, with no penalty to the team.
Variations
Easier
Run only one lap in race 1 and shorten the loop to 300 meters.
Standard
Two laps of a 400 to 600 meter loop, scoring the top four places on each team.
Harder
All five runners score, and a hill section is added that is climbed twice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student covers a shorter loop on firm ground and gets a place card based on finishing order on that route.
- Visual impairment: the student runs with a guide from their own team on a tether.
- Lower fitness: make the student the fifth, non-scoring runner in race 1 so they can run without pressure.
Learning goals
- Run continuously over varied terrain.
- Choose a pace that lets them finish without stopping.
- Understand team scoring and support every teammate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 30
- pinnies: 25
- place cards: 25
Teacher tip
Station a student or aide at the farthest point of the course so nobody cuts. Have place cards numbered 1 to 25 in order and clipped together so you can hand them out quickly.
