Tchoukball: Fan Defense and Two-Frame Attack
6-on-6 tchoukball with a frame at each end: both teams may attack either frame and the defense sets up in a fan to catch the rebound. Students work on reading rebounds, staggered defensive positioning and switching frames on offense.
How to play
- Put a frame at each end with a 3 m (10 ft) no-go zone marked with cones. Make four teams of 6: two play and two scout from the sideline (3 min).
- Review the rules: no contact, three passes max before a shot, three steps with the ball and no intercepting passes. A point is scored if the rebound lands in the court without the defense catching it.
- Fan: when a shot is coming, the defense staggers into two lines, three close and three deep. Practice with unguarded shots (2 min per team).
- 5-minute game: teams may shoot at either frame, but not more than twice in a row at the same one.
- Rotate: scouts come on and count the gaps in the other team's fan (4 games of 5 min).
- Wrap-up: each team says which line of the fan let in the most rebounds (2 min).
Rules
- No blocking or bothering anyone throwing or catching.
- Nobody steps into the frame's no-go zone.
- If the rebound goes out or the defense catches it, there is no point and the defense takes over.
- Scouts stay 2 m (6 ft) off the sideline, away from rebounds.
Variations
Easier
One frame and four passes allowed.
Standard
Two frames, fan defense and no more than two shots in a row at one frame.
Harder
The ball must touch four players before a shot, and the fan sets up without talking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the close line of the fan and shoot from a fixed spot.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball and have the shooter call "shot."
- Lower skill level: may catch the rebound after one bounce to stop the point.
Learning goals
- Organize a staggered defense to catch rebounds.
- Switch the point of attack to surprise the defense.
- Respect the no-contact rule.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tchoukball frames: 2
- team handballs: 2
- pinnies: 12
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
The defense tends to crowd the frame: insist on two lines. Check frame tension and stability before starting.
