Tchoukball: Bounce It into the Gaps
A tchoukball drill where attackers shoot at the frame aiming for the rebound to land in an open gap between defenders standing in hoops. Students practice shooting accuracy, reading the defense, and catching rebounds.
How to play
- Set up two tchoukball frames, each with a 10-foot half-circle no-go zone marked with cones. In front of each, 15 to 25 feet out, place 4 hoops for the defenders (3 min).
- Each frame has 12 students: 4 defenders in pinnies, each standing in a hoop, and 8 attackers in two lines 30 feet away. The extra student keeps score.
- The first attacker receives a pass from the other line, takes up to three steps, and shoots at the frame from outside the no-go zone.
- If the rebound hits the floor in bounds without a defender catching it, the offense scores 1 point; if a defender catches it without leaving their hoop, the defense scores 1.
- Every 6 shots, 4 attackers rotate to defense. In the second half, defenders may leave their hoops and move freely (15 min).
Rules
- Nobody steps into the no-go zone, on offense or defense.
- Maximum of three steps with the ball and 3 seconds to shoot.
- If the rebound lands out of bounds or in the no-go zone, the defense scores.
- Safety: defenders stay at least 10 feet from the frame, and shooters only shoot when the defense is ready.
Variations
Easier
Only 2 defenders in hoops, and the scorekeeper helps by pointing out gaps.
Standard
4 defenders in hoops, then free, and a rotation every 6 shots.
Harder
Play 4-on-4 with a maximum of three passes before shooting to apply what was learned.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: defends from a fixed hoop close by and shoots from a spot closer to the frame.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball, and a teammate calls out the open gap.
- Lower skill level: may shoot two-handed from 12 feet.
Learning goals
- Aim the shot so the rebound lands in open space.
- Read where the defense is before shooting.
- Catch the rebound by anticipating its path.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tchoukball frames: 2
- foam balls: 4
- hoops: 8
- cones: 12
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
If you only have one frame, use the rest of the class as a moving defense and rotate every 3 minutes. Remind students that tchoukball has no contact and no pass interceptions: the defense only plays the rebound.
