Tag Games for Elementary School: Tweak the Variables
The class plays a basic tag game and modifies it by changing one variable at a time: size of the space, number of taggers, safe zones or how to get freed. They measure how long each player is running and how often they get tagged to decide which version to take to elementary school.
How to play
- Base game: tag with two taggers in pinnies on a 20 x 20 m field for 2 minutes (3 min).
- Explain the variable card and give each group of four one variable to change: space, taggers, hoop safe zones or freeing by a teammate (3 min).
- Four 2-minute tests: each one applies one group's proposal, and that group leads and observes while the rest play; after each test it records how many players stood still for more than 20 seconds and how fun it felt (12 min).
- Final analysis: pick the combination of variables with the most participation and write the elementary school version (7 min).
Rules
- Tag by touching the back or shoulder with an open hand, never pushing.
- Safe zones protect for no more than 5 seconds in a row.
- Taggers change in each test so everyone runs.
- Keep a 3-meter safety buffer around the field boundaries.
Variations
Easier
Test only two variables: space and number of taggers.
Standard
Four variables tested in 2-minute rounds with participation data.
Harder
Each group must combine two variables and predict the effect beforehand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as a tagger with nearby safe zones or as the data observer.
- Visual impairment: plays holding a buddy guide's arm, and taggers wear a bell.
- Asthma: alternates one test playing and one observing, with the inhaler within reach.
Learning goals
- Understand how task variables change participation and intensity.
- Make design decisions based on systematic observation.
- Adapt popular games to the needs of elementary students.

Teacher tip
Remember that in elementary PE, time on task is the priority: credit students who use it as their main criterion. Keep the cards for the project portfolio.

1-on-1 duels that always start in triple threat (shoot, pass or dribble), where the attacker uses the jab step and the shot fake to read the defender before going.

10-20-30 interval running in pairs
The 10-20-30 method strings together 30 seconds of easy jogging, 20 at a moderate pace and 10 at top speed, in five-minute blocks.
