Table Tennis Team Cup Match
A team table tennis competition for teams of four in which each match combines singles and doubles, like international team cups. Students work on technique in real games, lineup strategy, officiating, and supporting their team.
How to play
- Six teams of 4 (any extra student helps with the master scoreboard) and two tables per team match. Each team secretly sets its order: A, B, C, and D (3 min).
- Round 1: singles A vs. A and B vs. B on the two tables; C and D from both teams officiate, one from each team at each table.
- Round 2: singles C vs. C and D vs. D, with A and B officiating. Round 3: crossover doubles at the same time, each team's A-B pair against the other team's C-D pair.
- Games to 11 points or 4 minutes; the team that wins more games wins the match, and a 3–3 tie goes to total points (3 rounds, 12 min).
- Record the result on the whiteboard, and each team plays a second match against a new opponent (12 min).
Rules
- The player order is written down before the match and cannot change.
- Officials call the score and make the calls; players do not argue.
- Teammates cheer from outside the playing area and never boo the other team.
- Leave at least 2 m (6 ft) of clear space between tables.
Variations
Easier
Games to 7 points and a simple serve with no toss rules.
Standard
Six-game matches to 11 points, including doubles.
Harder
Add an extra singles round where each team's top two players face different opponents.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays at an adapted table and is placed in doubles with a partner who covers more space.
- Shyness or autism: the student may choose to officiate first and know their playing order from the start.
- Skill level: teams are balanced, and the secret order lets every team build a strategy.
Learning goals
- Apply table tennis technique in real games.
- Decide on the best lineup as a team.
- Officiate and cheer with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ping-pong tables: 6
- paddles: 25
- ping-pong balls: 18
- whiteboard: 1
Teacher tip
Prepare a sheet with the round-by-round draw for each match so teams can run it themselves. With fewer tables, use one-table rounds with games to 7.
