Table Tennis Multiball Trios
A many-ball drill where one student feeds from a bucket, another hits nonstop, and a third collects. It gives students lots of forehand and backhand repetitions in a short time and teaches them to feed well to help a partner.
How to play
- Groups of three per table: a feeder with a bucket of 30 balls on the far side, a hitter, and a collector with a second bucket.
- The feeder drops a ball from the hand and taps it gently so it bounces once on their side and once on the hitter's side, always to the same spot.
- Set 1: 30 crosscourt forehands. Set 2: 30 crosscourt backhands. Set 3: alternate forehand and backhand.
- When the bucket is empty, rotate: hitter to collector, collector to feeder, feeder to hitter; the collector brings back a full bucket (about 2 min per rotation, 3 rounds, 16 min).
- Final challenge: the hitter tries to land 10 balls in a row in a marked half of the table (2 min).
Rules
- The collector picks up only behind and beside the hitter, never in front.
- The feeder keeps a pace the hitter can handle.
- Pick balls up by bending the knees; never step on them.
- Each group returns its balls to its bucket at the end.
Variations
Easier
The feeder tosses the ball onto the table by hand instead of tapping it.
Standard
Sets of 30 balls: forehand, backhand, and alternating.
Harder
The feeder changes direction without warning and the hitter has to move.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the hitter plays from a wheelchair at the table and the feeder always aims at the same spot.
- Hearing impairment: the feeder holds up the ball as a signal before each feed.
- Skill level: each group adjusts the feeding speed to the hitter.
Learning goals
- Repeat forehands and backhands with stable technique.
- Feed accurately to help a partner.
- Run the group rotation independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ping-pong tables: 8
- paddles: 25
- ping-pong balls: 250
- buckets: 16
Teacher tip
The quality of the drill depends on the feeder, so spend a minute teaching a soft, consistent feed. Old training balls and recycled paint buckets work fine.
