Table Tennis Matches with Student Coaches
Table tennis matches to 11 points where each player has a student coach who watches and gives one tactical tip between games and during a timeout. Students practice reading opponents, communicating constructively, and making decisions under pressure.
How to play
- Groups of 4 per table: two play and each player has a coach sitting behind their side with an observation sheet.
- During the first game, the coach notes where the opponent misses most (forehand, backhand, short or long serve).
- Play best-of-three matches to 11; between games there is 1 minute for the coach to give one specific tip.
- Each player may call one 1-minute timeout per match to talk with their coach.
- When the match ends, players and coaches switch roles; each round takes about 12 minutes.
Rules
- Coaches speak only between games or during the timeout.
- Tips must be specific and positive: "Serve long to their backhand," not "Don't miss."
- For safety, coaches sit 6 feet from the table, outside the playing area.
Variations
Easier
The coach picks a tip from a list of five options on the sheet.
Standard
One open tip between games and one timeout per match.
Harder
At the end, the coach explains to the group whether the tip changed the game.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays from a wheelchair at the end of an adapted table or serves as a coach.
- Shy students: may give the tip in writing on the sheet.
- Skill gaps: players are matched by level, while coaches can be any level.
Learning goals
- Observe the opponent to spot weaknesses.
- Give a clear, useful tactical tip.
- Apply coaching advice during play.

Teacher tip
At the start, model one good tip and one poor tip so students see the difference. Spend time at tables where the coach talks too much and remind them of the one-tip rule.
