Table Tennis Doubles: Diagonal Serve and Figure-Eight Moves
Table tennis doubles, where partners hit in strict alternating order, with two keys: the diagonal serve from the right half to the opponent's right half and figure-eight movement to clear space for the partner after each shot. Each group of four includes a rotating umpire.
How to play
- Explain doubles rules: diagonal serve, hitting order and change of receiving order each game (4 min).
- Figure-eight movement without a ball, then with a slow cooperative rally, hitting in turns (6 min).
- Points that start with a legal diagonal serve; the umpire, rotating every 3 points, calls order errors (6 min).
- Doubles game to 11, changing partners halfway through (7 min).
- Final question: which right-handed and left-handed combination leaves the most space, and why (2 min).
Rules
- After hitting, move back and to your side so you do not collide with your partner.
- Nobody crosses in front of the partner when they are about to hit.
- Keep the paddle hand close to the body while moving.
- A pair that hits out of order loses the point.
Variations
Easier
Cooperative rally in alternating order with no scoring.
Standard
Diagonal serve, figure-eight movement and games with a rotating umpire.
Harder
Require a short serve and have the receiving pair attack the return.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: the pair moves side to side instead of in a figure eight, as in Paralympic doubles.
- Autism: chalk the figure-eight path on the floor.
- Partial visual impairment: the partner calls “mine” before each of their own shots.
Learning goals
- Apply the specific doubles rules for serving and hitting order.
- Coordinate movement with the partner.
- Umpire order faults with sound judgment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- table tennis tables: 7
- table tennis paddles: 28
- table tennis balls: 60
Teacher tip
Doubles need more space than singles: keep tables at least 10 feet apart. If a pair has one lefty and one righty, use them as an example of ideal positioning.
