T-Test Agility Drill with Technique Practice and Retest
Students run the T-test for agility, practice lateral shuffle and braking technique, and retake the test in the same class. They see how technique improves their time and record the data for their program.
How to play
- Set up 4 T-courses: a start cone, a center cone 10 yd (9 m) ahead, and two side cones 5 yd (4.5 m) to each side of the center cone. Groups of 6 per course (3 min).
- Explain the course: sprint forward to the center cone, shuffle left to the left cone, shuffle right to the right cone, shuffle back to center, and backpedal to the start, touching each cone with a hand (2 min).
- First test: each student makes one timed attempt while one partner times and another records. Rotate roles (6 min).
- Six minutes of technique practice in pairs: low stance, no crossing feet in the shuffle, and braking with the outside leg, using 5-yard segments (6 min).
- Retest: another timed attempt with the same roles (6 min).
- Each student calculates their improvement and notes which technique tip helped most (2 min).
Rules
- You must touch every cone; otherwise the attempt is repeated.
- Feet don't cross during the shuffle.
- Backpedal with eyes forward and no diving at the finish.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the course to 5 yd and 2.5 yd, with no backpedal.
Standard
Full T-test, technique practice, and retest.
Harder
The timer randomly calls the starting side at the moment of the start.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: wheelchair course with turns instead of lateral shuffles.
- Visual impairment: use sound cones or a partner who calls from each cone.
- Low fitness level: record the first time and the improvement, not a comparison with others.
Learning goals
- Measure agility with a standardized test.
- Improve lateral shuffle and braking technique.
- Recognize immediate improvement from technique practice.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- stopwatch: 4
- worksheets: 25
Teacher tip
Many students cross their feet or pop up when shuffling, so correct it during practice. Leave enough room behind the start cone for the backpedal.
