T-Test Agility Drill with Partner Timing
Students run the T-Test, a T-shaped course that combines forward sprinting, lateral shuffling and backpedaling. Partners time two trials, so the class works on agility, braking technique and analyzing their own improvement.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 and set up one T per group: start cone A, cone B 10 yards straight ahead, and cones C and D 5 yards to each side of B (3 min).
- Demonstrate: sprint A to B, shuffle to C, shuffle to D, shuffle back to B and backpedal to A, touching each cone. Everyone tries it twice at 60% (4 min).
- Roles: runner, timer, two judges and recorder; rotate after every trial.
- Trial one from a still start: the clock starts on the first movement and stops at A; each missed touch or crossed step adds 1 second (6 min).
- Before trial two, each judge gives the runner one specific cue, such as stay low in the shuffle or start braking two steps before the cone.
- Run trial two the same way; students record their improvement and the cue that helped most (6 min).
- Wrap up in a circle: three students share which technique change made them faster (1 min).
Rules
- Touch the base of the cone with your hand without knocking it over.
- Feet never cross or click together during the shuffle.
- Take at least 2 minutes of recovery between trials while you work another role.
- Safety: glance over your shoulder when backpedaling and keep 5 yards behind cone A clear.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the course to 6 and 3 yards and let students turn around to run back forward.
Standard
Full 10-yard and 5-yard course with two timed trials.
Harder
Add a third trial starting to the left and compare both directions.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: run the course in a wheelchair with wider cone spacing and track personal improvement only.
- Autism or shyness: give a picture card of the course and a set timer role before running.
- Lower fitness: one timed trial plus one technique-only trial without the clock.
Learning goals
- Change direction forward, sideways and backward with control.
- Apply a technique cue to improve a personal time.
- Time and record data accurately and respectfully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- stopwatches: 5
- worksheets: 25
- pencils: 5
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is braking late and slipping at cone B, so cue short, choppy steps before each touch. Check that the surface is dry and free of sand or gravel.
