Synchronized Partner Bodyweight Routine
Each pair designs and rehearses a one-minute routine of eight bodyweight exercises performed to the beat of the music in perfect sync, then shows it to another pair for peer scoring. Students build muscular endurance and rhythm and learn to plan a balanced sequence.
How to play
- Pairs get two yoga mats. The teacher plays a song at about 120 beats per minute and explains that each exercise lasts 8 counts (2 reps of 4 counts) (2 min).
- Design (5 min): the pair picks 8 exercises that include at least legs, upper-body push, core, and a jump, plus one mirror moment. They write down the order and transitions on a sheet.
- Rehearsal (6 min): practice in four-exercise chunks counting out loud, then the full routine played twice in a row (about 2 minutes).
- Showcase (5 min): pairs team up two by two; one pair performs while the other scores sync (0 to 2), form (0 to 2), and variety (0 to 2). Then they switch.
- Fix it (2 min): each pair works on their lowest score and runs the routine one last time.
- Wrap-up (2 min): two volunteer pairs perform for the whole class.
Rules
- Both partners must be able to do every exercise well.
- Count out loud during rehearsal, but perform in silence.
- Safety: no exercises where one partner carries the other, and every jump lands softly.
Variations
Easier
A 6-exercise routine to a slower song with no mirror moment.
Standard
Eight 8-count exercises in sync, scored by another pair.
Harder
A 12-exercise routine with two level changes (floor and standing) and a 4-count canon.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair builds a routine where one partner does the seated version of the same exercise to the same beat.
- Hearing impairment: during rehearsal the partner signals the counts with a hand movement or shoulder taps.
- Shyness: performing for the whole class is optional; showing the other pair is enough.
Learning goals
- Design a balanced and safe sequence of strength exercises.
- Match movement to a musical beat and to a partner.
- Evaluate another pair's work using clear criteria.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music (speaker): 1
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
