Swinging Hoop Throw-Through
A moving-target game: a hoop hangs from the basketball rim and swings while throwers try to get the ball through it at just the right moment. It builds hand-eye coordination, timing, and accuracy.
How to play
- Hang a hoop from each of the 4 basketball rims with a rope so it sits 4 feet off the floor. Make 4 groups of 6 and mark a throwing line with cones at 10 feet (3 min).
- Phase one with the hoop still: each student throws 3 soft balls overhand, trying to get them through (3 min).
- One student, the swinger, stands to the side and gently pushes the hoop side to side. The others take turns throwing as the hoop passes the middle.
- A clean throw through is 2 points; touching the hoop and going through is 1. A retriever behind the hoop rolls balls back. Swinger and retriever rotate every 2 min (8 min).
- Final challenge (6 min): the swing gets wider, and the group tries to make 10 throws through together before time runs out.
Rules
- The hoop only swings side to side, never toward the throwers.
- The retriever stands 10 feet behind the hoop, out of the throwing line.
- Throw one at a time, only after the previous thrower has released.
Variations
Easier
Keep the hoop still or barely swinging, with a line at 6 feet.
Standard
Gentle side-to-side swing, line at 10 feet, and points for clean throws.
Harder
Wide swing, with non-dominant hand throws or throws right after catching a pass.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: throw from the chair with the hoop slightly lower and a shorter swing.
- Visual impairment: wrap the hoop in bright tape and have the swinger say now as it passes the middle.
- Skill level: students who hit easily throw from a cone farther back.
Learning goals
- Time a throw to a moving target.
- Throw overhand with accuracy.
- Respect turns and roles within the group.

Teacher tip
Tie the rope with a secure knot and check that the hoop does not spin. If there are no baskets, hang it from a soccer goal crossbar.
