Swing the Ball vs. the Defensive Wall
A 4-on-3 mini team handball attack where defenders may only slide side to side along the goal area line. Attackers learn to swing the ball quickly from side to side to open gaps and shoot with an advantage.
How to play
- Set up 3 small goals with a 5 m goal area and a cone line at 7 m. Make 3 groups of 8: 4 attackers, 3 defenders and a goalie; the extra student rotates in as a sub attacker (2 min).
- The 3 defenders stand in a 1 m strip along the area and may only slide sideways; they can raise their arms to intercept.
- The 4 attackers stay outside the 7 m line and pass without dribbling to shift the defense, shooting when a gap opens. Each attack lasts 15 seconds at most.
- Goal after 4 or more passes: 2 points; with fewer passes: 1. Interception or save: 1 point for the defense. Rotate roles every 5 attacks; play 15 minutes.
- Wrap-up (3 min): ask how many passes it took to open a gap and which side opened up most.
Rules
- Defenders never touch an attacker or leave their strip.
- Always shoot from outside the area and never at the goalie's head.
- No dribbling on offense: passes only.
Variations
Easier
Play 4-on-2 so gaps appear sooner.
Standard
Four-on-three, a sliding line defense and double points after 4 passes.
Harder
Play 4-on-4, and one defender may step out to pressure the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: attacks from a fixed back-court spot, and their passes cannot be intercepted.
- Shy students: start on the wing, where there is less pressure, and raise a hand when open.
- Lower fitness: spends more time on defense, where movement is short, and rests as the sub.
Learning goals
- Move the ball quickly to shift the defense.
- Spot the gap and decide when to shoot.
- Work together with teammates on offense and defense.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 6
- cones: 30
- pinnies: 12
- small goals: 3
Teacher tip
Attackers tend to drift toward the area and bunch up, so mark their spots with cones at first. Count passes out loud yourself in the first attacks so they understand the double point.
