Student-Read Relaxation Script
In groups of five, one student reads a short relaxation script in a soft, slow voice while the other four follow along lying down; the reader changes every class. Students practice relaxation, leading it on their own, and the responsibility of guiding others.
How to play
- Form groups of five with yoga mats in a star shape, heads toward the center, leaving a spot for the reader (1 minute).
- The reader gets a card with a script of about 12 sentences: breathing, a tour through the body, and coming back.
- The reader sits down, reads silently for 1 minute, and marks with a slash where to pause for about 5 seconds.
- The other four lie on their backs while the reader reads the full script slowly (4 minutes).
- When done, the group sits up and gives the reader one tip about voice, pace, or pauses (2 minutes).
Rules
- The reader speaks softly and slowly, with no rush to finish.
- Students lying down don't talk or interrupt until the end.
- Keep groups spread apart so voices don't overlap.
- When finished, everyone rolls to one side before sitting up.
Variations
Easier
The teacher reads the first half of the script as a model and the student reader finishes.
Standard
One reader per group reads the full script and gets one tip.
Harder
The reader writes their own script at home using a given structure and leads it in class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can read from their wheelchair or follow the relaxation seated.
- Dyslexia or reading difficulties: offer a shorter script in large print or let two students read together.
- Shyness: the student can read first to a small group of two trusted classmates.
Learning goals
- Lead a short relaxation with an appropriate voice and pace.
- Follow a classmate-led relaxation attentively.
- Give and receive tips for leading the activity better.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- script cards: 5
Teacher tip
Prepare three or four different scripts and laminate them for reuse. Spread groups as far apart as possible: in small spaces it works better with only three groups at once.
