Student-Led Step: Teach-a-Block Routine
Each group creates a 32-count step aerobics block and teaches it to the class the way a group fitness instructor would. At the end, all the blocks are linked into one class routine, building composition, communication and aerobic endurance.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 and give each a move theme: basics, turns, over-the-top moves, knees and kicks, or lateral travel.
- Each group has 8 minutes to compose a 32-count block using 4 moves from its theme and to plan how to count and cue it.
- One at a time, each group comes to the front and teaches its block in 3 minutes: feet at half tempo first, then on the beat, then adding arms.
- After each block is taught, add it to the previous ones and have the class run the whole chain once.
- When all 5 blocks are in, dance the full routine twice in a row with the music at 128 BPM.
- 2-minute wrap-up: each group shares which cue or explanation from another group was easiest to follow.
Rules
- Each block must be exactly 32 counts and start on the right foot.
- The group teaching counts out loud and calls each change 4 counts ahead.
- Nobody hops backward off the step.
- Respect the teaching group's turn: everyone else listens instead of rehearsing their own block.
Variations
Easier
Each group builds a 16-count block and blocks are linked only two at a time.
Standard
Five 32-count blocks linked into one 160-count routine.
Harder
Every block must include a direction change and a turn, and the routine is also performed mirrored.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student leads the group's counting and visual cues and performs the arm patterns seated.
- Shyness: the student can teach with a partner, one giving the verbal cues and the other demonstrating.
- High fitness level: challenge the student to keep the arms overhead throughout the full chain.
Learning goals
- Compose a step block that fits the musical phrase.
- Communicate a movement pattern clearly to the rest of the class.
- Cooperate to build a group routine.
Equipment for a class of 25
- steps: 25
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Hand each group a card with basic instructor cues (fingers for counts, hand signals for direction) before they start building. If a block does not fit, trim it to 32 counts yourself so the class keeps moving.
