Stuck Sheet: Dance with Newspapers and Speed
A sheet of newspaper stays pressed against the chest, back or arm only by air pressure while the student moves: slow down and it falls. The challenge forces continuous movement and direction changes, and it turns into a dance piece in which the sheet is a second skin.
How to play
- Each student places an open sheet on the chest, lets go and jogs in a straight line so it does not fall; try different speeds (3 min).
- Move the sheet to another area (back, palm, thigh) and explore curves, turns and direction changes while keeping it on (4 min).
- In pairs, one carries the sheet and the other follows like a shadow; when the carrier stops, the sheet falls and roles switch (4 min).
- Groups of six compose a 40-second route to music in which all the sheets fall at once into a frozen ending, then perform it (7 min).
Rules
- Everyone travels in the same circular direction around the playground to avoid head-on collisions.
- Look ahead, not at the sheet, when running.
- Collect the sheets at the end and put them in the paper recycling bin.
Variations
Easier
Use half a sheet and allow holding it with one finger during turns.
Standard
Full sheet, no hands, and a group composition with a shared ending.
Harder
Two sheets at once on different body areas for the whole composition.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, the sheet goes on the chest or knees and the student moves with pushes.
- Visual impairment: moves alongside a guide holding a short rope in a clear lane.
- Asthma or low fitness: works at an easy jog with half a sheet and rests between rounds.
Learning goals
- Keep moving continuously while changing direction and speed.
- Use an everyday object as an expressive resource.
- Compose a synchronized choreographic ending as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- newspapers: 10
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Collect old newspapers from the library or from home a few days ahead. If it is windy, use a covered area or the gym.
