Stress Release Dance: Shake, Drop, and Flow
A free-movement class guided by music phases: shake out each body part, move with power, release into flowing movement, and finish in stillness. Students use creative movement to let go of tension and recognize their own emotions.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): each student finds a spot with space around them; explain that there are no correct steps and nobody watches anyone.
- Shake phase (4 min): to upbeat music, shake out hands, arms, shoulders, legs, and the whole body, 30 seconds per area, led by the teacher.
- Power phase (4 min): big, strong moves like pushing imaginary walls or stomping, breathing out with sound.
- Flow phase (5 min): slow music with circular, continuous movement, exploring high, middle, and low levels and traveling around the gym.
- Stillness phase (5 min): lower to the mat, lie still for 3 minutes noticing pulse and breathing, then take 2 minutes to notice how you feel compared to the start.
Rules
- Safety: keep an arm's length plus from everyone else.
- Nobody comments on or copies anyone else's movement.
- Each student chooses how intensely to move.
- Silence during the stillness phase.
Variations
Easier
Lead each phase with specific moves for students to copy.
Standard
Four music phases with free movement and final stillness.
Harder
In the flow phase, pairs create a no-touch movement conversation.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every phase seated using the torso, arms, and head.
- Shy students: stand at the back of the room or dim the lights and allow eyes closed.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: phase changes shown with gestures or by flicking the lights.
Learning goals
- Use expressive movement to release tension.
- Recognize changes in emotional state after practice.
- Explore different movement qualities with music.
Equipment for a class of 25

- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Join in at the start to break the ice and turn off some of the lights. Pick instrumental music for the flow phase so lyrics don't distract.
