Strength Freeze Dance
Students dance or move freely to music and, when it stops, take the strength pose shown on a card and hold it until the music starts again. They build isometric strength throughout the body in a playful way with no eliminations.
How to play
- Prepare six picture cards: squat, plank, superman, glute bridge, side plank and boat. Students spread out in the space (2 min).
- Teach each pose for 10 seconds, correcting back, knee and hip alignment (3 min).
- Play music and have them move with dance steps, light jumps or skipping. When it stops, show a card and everyone holds that pose for 15 to 20 seconds.
- Class challenge: if nobody moves during a freeze, the class earns a letter of the word STRONG. Six stops per block, two blocks (8 min).
- Final block in pairs: shared strength freezes, such as a plank with a high-five or back-to-back squats (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody is out: if you move, reset the pose and keep going.
- Keep breathing normally during the freeze.
- When moving, respect others' space and avoid collisions.
- If a pose is uncomfortable, choose the easier version on the card.
Variations
Easier
10-second freezes and versions with knees or hands down.
Standard
15- to 20-second freezes with all six poses.
Harder
30-second freezes or two poses linked without resting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, freezes use the trunk and arms: arms out to the side, pressing palms together and lifting the body with hands on the armrests.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: signal the stop by flicking the lights or holding the card up high.
- Lower fitness: may always choose the easy version without costing the class its letter.
Learning goals
- Build isometric strength in the legs, core and arms.
- Learn and perform six basic poses with good form.
- Enjoy exercise and manage emotions in a group challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
- cards: 6
Teacher tip
Choose upbeat songs and stop the music at unexpected moments so students cannot anticipate it. Make the cards large and laminated so you can reuse them.
