Stop, Think, Go: Cool-Down Timeout 3-on-3 Basketball
A 3-on-3 basketball game in which any player can call a cool-down timeout when they feel anger building. Students use the traffic light (stop, think, go) to manage anger and arguments without quitting the game.
How to play
- Explain the traffic light with three cards taped to the pole: red, I stop and breathe; yellow, I think; green, I act and get back in (3 min).
- Make 8 teams of three and play 3-on-3 half court at four hoops, with one scorekeeper per hoop.
- Each player gets one cool-down timeout per game: they say 'red' and their team breathes with them for 30 seconds by the cone.
- On yellow they say in one sentence what bothered them and suggest a fix; on green, the other team inbounds.
- Play 5-minute games to 11; winners move up a hoop (15 min).
- Wrap-up (3 min): each team shares a moment when the traffic light worked.
Rules
- Calling a timeout is never mocked and can't be used to stop a fast break.
- During red, nobody talks to that player.
- Players raise a hand when they commit a foul.
- Safety: no contact on shots and no screens with arms out.
Variations
Easier
No score, and the teacher may also call the timeout.
Standard
One cool-down timeout per player per game with the full traffic light.
Harder
A team that settles a dispute on green with no help earns 2 bonus points.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play in a wheelchair with a personal shooting spot and defenders an arm's length away.
- Hearing impairment or autism: visual traffic light cards and an agreed hand signal.
- Low fitness: free sub with the scorekeeper every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Recognize the body signals of anger during play.
- Apply a stop, think and act strategy in a conflict.
- Behave respectfully toward teammates and opponents.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 4
- pinnies: 12
- cards: 12
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Never make a student explain their anger in front of everyone: red and breathing are enough. Publicly praise the first student who uses the traffic light.
