Stop the Bus Category Relay
A relay version of the classic paper-and-pencil category game: teams take turns sprinting to their sheet to write a word that starts with the called letter in one of five categories. Students practice quick decisions, speed, and vocabulary.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 behind a cone. About 50 feet away, tape one sheet of butcher paper per team with five columns: name, animal, food, place, and thing (2 min).
- Each round the teacher calls a letter and the first student in each line runs to the team sheet with the marker.
- The runner writes one word in any empty column, runs back, and hands the marker to the next teammate, who makes the next trip.
- When a team fills all five columns, its runner yells "Stop the bus!" and everyone freezes. If nobody calls it, the round ends after 90 seconds.
- Check answers out loud with the whole class: 10 points for a valid word no other team has, 5 if another team has it too, and 0 if it does not fit (2 min per round).
- Play 5 or 6 rounds with different letters, changing the running order so everyone writes in every column (12 min).
Rules
- Only one runner per team is out at a time; everyone else waits behind the cone.
- One word per trip; if a word is wrong, the next runner may cross it out and fix it.
- Hand the marker off, never throw it.
- Run out on the right side and come back on the left so nobody collides.
Variations
Easier
Use only three categories and common letters like M, P, or S.
Standard
Five categories, one word per trip, and a variety of letters called by the teacher.
Harder
Add tougher categories such as verb or job and require every word to have at least five letters.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: serve as the team's scribe at the sheet while teammates call out the word on arrival.
- Students who struggle with reading or students with autism: give a picture card for each category and let them check with the team before running.
- Fitness level: students who want more challenge shuffle or skip to the sheet; students who tire can speed-walk.
Learning goals
- Recall and write varied vocabulary from a starting letter.
- Decide quickly which column to fill based on what the team still needs.
- Work with teammates by taking turns and correcting mistakes respectfully.
