Stick License: Four Safety Stations
A four-station circuit where each student practices one school hockey safety rule and a partner signs off on their license. Before the first game, the whole class knows how to play without hurting anyone.
How to play
- Explain the four stations and hand out licenses in pairs: one practices, the other watches and signs (3 min).
- Station 1: shooting at the wall with a rope stretched at waist height behind the shooter; the stick must not touch it on the backswing or follow-through. Station 2: slow 1v1 steals without touching the opponent's stick or body. Rotate after five minutes (10 min).
- Station 3: foot control only to set the ball onto your own stick, and the ball always below the knee. Station 4: collect balls around a course without kneeling or sitting. Rotate after five minutes (10 min).
- Each pair checks the license; anyone with four signatures hands it to the teacher and keeps it for game day (2 min).
Rules
- The observer only signs if their partner follows the rule three times in a row.
- At station 2, never touch the opponent's stick: ball only.
- At station 1, nobody stands behind the shooter.
- A missing signature is redone at the end or next lesson, with no penalty.
Variations
Easier
Three stations and one correct try to get signed.
Standard
Four stations and three tries in a row.
Harder
At station 1 shoot on the move; at station 2 the defender may apply a bit more pressure.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: at station 4 collect balls from the chair with the stick; the rope at station 1 is lowered to their waist height.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: each station has a card with a drawing of the rule.
- Students with reading difficulties: the license uses icons instead of text.
Learning goals
- Know and apply four school hockey safety rules.
- Observe and assess a partner fairly.
- Take responsibility for playing without putting anyone at risk.
