Step Aerobics: Around-the-Step Moves
Students learn the step aerobics moves that change direction around the platform (L-step, straddle, over the top and corner to corner) and link them into a 32-count phrase. The focus is coordination, rhythm and aerobic endurance.
How to play
- Set the steps in three staggered rows, about 5 ft apart, with music at 125-128 BPM; review the basic step and V-step for 3 minutes to warm up.
- Teach the L-step (step up facing forward, step down off the side) and over the top (crossing the platform from one side to the other); 4 minutes, first at half tempo, then on the beat.
- Teach the straddle (step down with one foot on each side of the step and back up) and corner to corner; another 4 minutes counting out loud.
- Link the four moves into a 32-count phrase (8 counts each) and repeat it for 4 minutes while the teacher mirrors the class.
- In pairs, students reorder the four blocks and add their own arm pattern; 5 minutes to rehearse.
- 5-minute wrap-up: half the class performs its phrase while the other half copies it, then switch roles.
Rules
- Place your whole foot on the step; your heel never hangs off the edge.
- Step up and down close to the platform and never jump backward off it.
- Keep at least 5 ft of open space around each step so nobody collides during direction changes.
Variations
Easier
Use the platform with no risers and repeat each move for 16 counts before changing.
Standard
Use one riser and a 32-count phrase with all four moves at 128 BPM.
Harder
Raise the music to 132 BPM and add a small propulsion hop on the over-the-top move.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: perform the same foot patterns from a chair or on a flat platform, keeping the beat with the arms.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher holds up fingers to show how many counts are left before the next move.
- Lower fitness level: drop to the basic step without arms for one phrase and rejoin on the next.
Learning goals
- Perform direction-changing step moves safely.
- Link movements to a 32-count musical phrase.
- Sustain moderate aerobic intensity for 20 minutes.
Equipment for a class of 25
- steps: 25
- music: 1
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is stepping down too far from the platform and landing on the toes; cue students to bring the heel down. Put your strongest steppers in the back row so others have a reference when they turn.
