Starting Behind: 3-on-3 Basketball with a Deficit
Half-court 3-on-3 basketball games that start with one team down several points with little time left. Before playing, the trailing team prepares a response plan, and at the end students analyze what helps them keep competing when behind.
How to play
- Set up trios at four baskets with an observer trio at each; every game lasts 4 minutes and one team starts down 0-6, with baskets worth 1 point and threes worth 2 (3 min).
- The trailing team has 1 minute to agree on a plan: an intermediate target, one specific action and a team phrase (2 min).
- Round of games with a deficit; the observer trio records the trailing team's body language and messages (8 min).
- Switch roles: the other team starts behind, plans and plays, and the observers rotate in to play (10 min).
- Team analysis: what they did after falling behind, whether they stuck to the plan and what will help them after a real loss (7 min).
Rules
- Minimal contact: fouls are called and the defender's space is respected.
- The observer trio doesn't cheer or boo: they only take notes.
- After every game, teams shake hands, win or lose.
Variations
Easier
A 0-3 deficit and 5 minutes of play.
Standard
A 0-6 deficit in 4 minutes with a plan beforehand.
Harder
A 0-8 deficit, and the leading team may call a timeout that breaks the rhythm.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play at a lower basket or score by hitting the backboard, with a 3-foot protected space.
- Autism: explain in advance that the score starts against them and that it's an exercise, not a punishment.
- Hearing impairment: show the score with fingers or on a whiteboard next to the court.
Learning goals
- Maintain effort and focus while trailing.
- Plan intermediate targets in an adverse situation.
- Reflect on personal and team responses to losing.

Teacher tip
The intermediate target, such as 'cut it to 3 in two minutes', helps the most: make sure it's specific. Make sure it isn't always the same teams that start behind.
