Staircase Performance: Climbing, Descending and Pausing
The school staircase becomes a stage: groups create a site-specific piece that plays with levels, the rhythm of the steps and the view of an audience standing below. Students compose from a real space and manage safety in a place with a height difference.
How to play
- On the landing, the group studies the staircase and notes three ideas: possible stepping rhythms, viewpoints from below and places to pause (4 min).
- Exploration in groups of five, one group at a time on the stairs: go up and down at different rhythms, stop on a step, sit or lean toward the railing while holding the handrail (6 min).
- Each group composes a 60-second piece with an opening, a group pause and an ending in which everyone looks at the audience (8 min).
- Perform with the rest of the class as the audience at the bottom of the stairs, then discuss how the space was used (7 min).
Rules
- Always keep one hand free and near the handrail; no skipping steps, running or sitting on the railing.
- Only one group on the stairs at a time, and never during class changes.
- Never go down backward or with eyes closed.
- Always leave one side of the staircase clear for other people.
Variations
Easier
Use only the first five steps and the landing.
Standard
A 60-second piece on a full flight with the audience below.
Harder
The piece is seen from two points (below and above) and must work for both audiences.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: performs from the foot of the stairs or the landing as the focal point, with the rest of the group facing them.
- Visual impairment: works on the lower flight with the handrail as a guide and a classmate counting steps.
- Fear of heights or anxiety: stays on the first steps or takes the director role from below.
Learning goals
- Compose a short piece based on the features of a real space.
- Use levels and rhythm as expressive tools.
- Apply prevention measures when moving in a space with a height difference.

Teacher tip
Ask the principal for permission and choose a wide, low-traffic staircase. Walk the stairs beforehand to check for damaged steps or slippery floors.
