Stability Ball Recovery Stretches
A stretching sequence supported by a stability ball: lying back over it, side bends, child's pose with the ball, and a hamstring stretch. The ball supports the body so muscles can relax without load.
How to play
- Pairs share one stability ball; one stretches while the other steadies the ball from the sides. Switch on each exercise when the teacher claps.
- Back extension: sit on the ball, walk the feet forward until the back rests on it, and let the arms fall back, 30 seconds each (2 min).
- Side stretch: one knee on the mat and the side of the body over the ball, top arm reaching overhead, 30 seconds per side each (3 min).
- Ball child's pose: kneel with forearms on the ball and roll it forward while lowering the chest, 30 seconds each (2 min).
- Hamstrings: lie down with heels on the ball and legs straight, pull it closer on a slow exhale, 30 seconds each; put equipment away (3 min).
Rules
- The partner always steadies the ball during the extension and side stretches.
- Get on and off the ball slowly with feet firmly planted.
- Stretch gently, with no bouncing or pain.
Variations
Easier
Do only the extension and child's pose, with the ball against a wall.
Standard
Do all four stretches in pairs.
Harder
Hold each position 45 seconds and add long exhales to deepen the stretch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put the ball on a table to stretch the trunk and arms from a chair.
- Visual impairment: the partner guides each position change with verbal cues and a hand on the ball.
- Larger body size or poor stability: do the extension and side stretch with the ball against a wall.
Learning goals
- Perform supported recovery stretches safely.
- Improve spinal and posterior chain mobility after exercise.
- Work with a partner by providing stability and support.

Teacher tip
Make sure the balls are properly inflated and away from corners or tables. During the extension, have students rest their head on the ball so they don't strain the neck.
