Sprint Orienteering with Out-of-Bounds Zones
A short, very fast orienteering race around the school grounds, with areas marked on the map as out of bounds so runners must plan detours. It combines fast map reading, route choice under pressure and respect for the rules of the sport.
How to play
- Make a large-scale map of campus (1:1,000 or similar) with 12 controls and mark 3 or 4 out-of-bounds areas with purple hatching: landscaping, the parking lot or areas where other classes pass.
- Spend 3 minutes explaining the out-of-bounds symbol and that stepping into it costs that leg; show the required control order.
- Run individual starts every 20 seconds in two waves of 12–13 students; the waiting wave serves as judges at the out-of-bounds areas.
- Each runner visits all 12 controls in order, recording codes, and finishes where the teacher reads their time (about 6–8 minutes per wave).
- Judges write down the bib of anyone crossing an out-of-bounds area; that leg earns a 60-second penalty.
- Waves switch, and at the end students spend 4 minutes drawing the best route on the fastest legs.
Rules
- Controls must be visited in the given order; skipping one disqualifies the run.
- Crossing an out-of-bounds area adds 60 seconds.
- Slow down at corners and doorways to avoid collisions.
- No following another runner: if someone catches you, let them pass.
Variations
Easier
Cut to 8 controls and mark only 2 very obvious out-of-bounds areas.
Standard
Twelve controls in order with 3–4 out-of-bounds areas.
Harder
Add legs with two controls very close together and similar codes to punish rushing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: design an alternative course without stairs using the same out-of-bounds areas.
- Hearing impairment: use a visual hand signal to start and a card with the student's start minute.
- Lower fitness: allow walking on some legs and reward a penalty-free run.
Learning goals
- Read the map at high speed without losing accuracy.
- Plan efficient detours around out-of-bounds areas.
- Respect the rules and fair play of orienteering.
Equipment for a class of 25

- control markers: 12

Teacher tip
Clear the plan with the front office and other staff before using shared areas. Station judges in safe, visible spots, never in the middle of a walkway.
