Sprint Ladder: Move Up or Move Down
Twenty-meter sprints in groups of three on eight numbered lanes: the winner moves up a lane and the last runner moves down. Students practice starting from different positions, accelerating, and handling both winning and losing.
How to play
- Set 8 parallel 20 m lanes with cones and number them 1 to 8; put students in random groups of three (2 min).
- Explain the ladder: three students race in each lane; first place moves up to the next higher lane, last place moves down, and second place stays (2 min).
- On your whistle all lanes go at once; round 1 starts from a standing start.
- After each race students have 40 seconds to walk back, switch lanes and get set; change the start each round: sitting, lying on the back, facing backward or kneeling.
- Run 8 rounds in about 9 minutes; a winner in lane 8 stays there, and so does a last-place finisher in lane 1.
- Finish with a special round where every lane starts facing backward and turns on the whistle (2 min).
Rules
- Go only on the whistle; anyone who jumps the start repeats it one meter farther back.
- Each runner stays in an imaginary lane and may not cut in front of another runner.
- Slow down after the finish line, never right on it, to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Shorten races to 12 meters and always start standing.
Standard
Twenty-meter races with a different starting position every round.
Harder
At the finish students touch the ground and sprint back 5 meters; the first to cross that second line wins.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student races in a lane with a partner who moves the same way, and both move up and down like everyone else.
- Hard of hearing: pair the whistle with dropping an arm holding a bright scarf.
- Very high or low fitness: the ladder groups students of similar speed, so every race stays close.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a signal from a variety of starting positions.
- Accelerate in the first few meters while running in a straight line.
- Win and lose with good sportsmanship within a leveled system.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 32
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Leave at least 2 meters between lanes and 10 meters of clear run-off space. Make it clear that moving down is not a punishment; the goal is racing classmates of similar speed.
