Spotter, Runner, Builders: Copy the Model
Behind a standing mat sits a model made of equipment; only the spotter can see it, the runner sprints back to describe it, and the builders recreate it far away without having seen it. It works roles, precise communication, and stop-and-go effort.
How to play
- Teams of 5 or 6 with roles: one spotter next to the model, one or two runners, and the rest builders in their zone 15 meters away (3 min).
- Round 1: the runner goes back and forth as often as they like but may only talk; the spotter stays put, and builders can't look at the model (8 min).
- Compare: everyone goes to see the model and checks it against their copy (3 min).
- Round 2 with a new model and rotated roles; the runner can't use numbers, only comparisons ("as long as a stick") (8 min).
- Reflection: which information was useful and which role was hardest (3 min).
Rules
- Builders don't look at the model; the spotter doesn't look at the build.
- The runner doesn't touch the builders' equipment.
- Run in a marked lane so runners from different teams don't cross.
- Every team has the same model; the class wins if everyone gets close.
Variations
Easier
5-piece models and two runners.
Standard
8-piece models and one runner.
Harder
12-piece models, and the runner gets only 6 trips.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: can be the runner on a shorter, smooth lane, or the spotter.
- Hearing impairment: messages are given with sketches on a small whiteboard or with gestures.
- Visual impairment: works as a builder, building by touch from the runner's description.
Learning goals
- Pass on precise information quickly.
- Take on different roles and appreciate their difficulty.
- Sustain effort in back-and-forth runs.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 40
- hoops: 20
- pe sticks: 20
- balls: 15

Teacher tip
Set up the models before class behind standing mats or a table on its side. If you don't have many colored cones, add pinnies and balls for variety.
