Spotted Handstand to Forward Roll
A progression to link a handstand into a forward roll, with a spotter holding the legs and guiding a controlled arm bend. Students build arm strength, control in vertical and neck protection while rolling.
How to play
- Groups of three on doubled mats. Prerequisite: a solid forward roll and a spotted handstand. Three-minute review of both skills separately.
- Step 1 (4 minutes): from a squat, a forward roll with high hips, as if coming out of a short vertical; the spotter guides the back of the neck.
- Step 2 (4 minutes): kick up to a handstand with the spotter holding the ankles; hold 2 seconds and step down on the same side.
- Step 3 (5 minutes): from the spotted handstand, the performer tucks the chin, bends the arms slowly and the spotter guides the legs forward into the roll.
- Rotate roles every two tries: performer, leg spotter and a second spotter watching the head from the side.
- Two-minute wrap-up: discuss what it feels like to lower the arms while braking.
Rules
- Only students with a solid forward roll and spotted handstand try it.
- Tuck the chin before bending the arms.
- The spotter holds the legs until the back touches the mat.
- Use doubled mats with no one in front.
Variations
Easier
Practice only the high-hip roll from a squat and the spotted handstand separately.
Standard
Link a spotted handstand and roll with the spotter on the legs.
Harder
Link handstand, roll and a half-turn jump with the spotter only watching.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the second spotter or work on seated arm-push strength.
- Visual impairment: the spotter calls each phase and keeps constant contact.
- No spotted handstand yet: practice kicking up to vertical against the wall instead.
Learning goals
- Link an inverted balance with a forward roll.
- Control the arm bend to come down safely.
- Spot a partner in a complex gymnastics skill.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 14
Teacher tip
Do not let anyone try it without the prerequisites: offer a meaningful alternative. The typical error is collapsing without braking; have the spotter count "one, two" on the way down.
