Sport Stacking 3-6-3 Time Trials
In pairs, students learn the basic sport stacking sequence: building and taking down pyramids of 3, 6, and 3 cups with alternating hands while a partner times and coaches. Students develop hand-eye coordination, use of both hands, and personal-best improvement.
How to play
- Make 12 pairs and one group of three, each at a desk with 12 cups in three stacks of 3, 6, and 3 and a stopwatch (2 min).
- Demonstrate the upstack: for a 3, one hand sets two cups down and the other places one on top; for a 6, three, then two, then one, always alternating hands. To downstack, slide the cups down with both hands into a single stack. Practice 3-3-3 (4 min).
- Move on to the full 3-6-3, left to right. One partner stacks while the other checks that hands alternate; switch every 2 tries (6 min).
- Time trials: each student gets 3 attempts to upstack and downstack and records the best time. A fallen cup must be fixed before going on (5 min).
- Wrap-up: each pair figures out how much they improved and shares one useful tip (3 min).
Rules
- The clock starts and stops with both hands flat on the desk.
- Fix a fallen cup without stopping the clock.
- The observer gives a positive comment first, then one thing to improve.
Variations
Easier
Only 3-3-3, no timer, using the preferred hand.
Standard
The 3-6-3 sequence with alternating hands and three timed attempts.
Harder
Two 3-6-3 sequences in a row, or start each move with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adjust the desk height or use a lap tray.
- Autism: a card showing the sequence step by step and a visual signal instead of a whistle.
- Motor level: larger cups and the 3-3-3 sequence for students who need it.
Learning goals
- Coordinate both hands in an alternating, precise sequence.
- Set a personal time goal and work toward it.
- Give a partner helpful, respectful feedback.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Stacking cups (sets of 12): 13
- Stopwatches: 13
- Classroom desks: 13
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is using only the dominant hand. Record times: improvement over the first tries is fast and very motivating.
