Spoons Card Game with a Cone Dash
An active version of the card game Spoons: players pass cards around a circle looking for four of a kind, and when someone gets it everyone races for a cone, but there is one fewer cone than players. Students work on divided attention, reaction, and fair play.
How to play
- Groups of 5 sit in a circle on the floor. About 15 ft away, in the middle of the room, each group has 4 cones (one fewer than players). Each group uses 20 cards: four each of five different numbers.
- Deal 4 cards to each player. The dealer draws from the pile and passes one card to the left; everyone keeps passing one card at a time nonstop (1 min to explain).
- A player who gets four of a kind stands up and runs to grab a cone. As soon as anyone stands, everyone else may run too.
- The player left without a cone does 10 squats and becomes the next dealer; nobody is eliminated.
- Play 1-2 minute hands for 12 minutes; every cone grabbed earns a personal point.
- Every 4 minutes, two players switch groups to mix things up (2 min to wrap up and tally).
Rules
- One cone per person, and no pulling one out of someone's hands.
- Anyone who runs without four of a kind does the squats even if they get a cone.
- Pass cards one at a time and face down.
- Run looking ahead and slow down before the cones.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 4 and only three different numbers in play.
Standard
Five different numbers and cones at 15 ft.
Harder
Cones at 30 ft and players start lying face down.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student keeps a cone right beside them and only has to touch it, while everyone else must touch theirs in the middle.
- Hearing impairment: the game works as is, but agree that a raised hand signals the start of the race.
- High fitness: start with your back to the cones and turn before running.
Learning goals
- Pay attention to two things at once: the cards and the group's movements.
- React quickly when you see someone else take off.
- Follow honesty rules without needing a referee.
Equipment for a class of 25
- decks of playing cards: 5
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Prepare the trimmed card decks before class so you do not lose time. Space the groups' cones well apart so the races do not cross.
