Spoons Card Game Dash
An active version of the card game Spoons: the group passes cards until someone collects four of a kind and heads for the spoon cone, and then everyone may go. Students practice divided attention, reaction time, and handling emotions, with no one sitting out.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 sitting in circles. Put a cone with 4 plastic spoons 4 m (13 ft) from each circle, one fewer than players (2 min).
- Each player holds 4 cards. The dealer draws from the deck and passes a card left; everyone passes nonstop and never holds more than 4.
- A player with four of a kind lays the cards face down and power-walks to grab a spoon, sneakily if they like. As soon as anyone stands, everyone may go.
- Four of a kind earns 3 points and each spoon earns 1. The student without a spoon isn't out; they deal the next hand.
- Play about 8 hands of 1 to 2 minutes. Halfway through, move the cone to 6 m (20 ft) or require touching a wall first (16 min).
Rules
- One spoon each and no pulling one from someone's hand; settle ties with rock-paper-scissors.
- Walk fast; no diving to the floor or pushing.
- Pass cards one at a time.
Variations
Easier
A pair is enough and the cone is 2 m (6 ft) away.
Standard
Four of a kind, cone at 4 m (13 ft), and one fewer spoon than players.
Harder
Circle another cone before grabbing a spoon, with two spoons missing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put the spoons on a desk within reach and give a 2-second head start.
- Hearing or visual impairment: give a tap on the shoulder when someone stands up.
- Fitness: more challenge bear crawling to the cone; less load walking calmly.
Learning goals
- Pay attention to the cards and the group at once.
- React quickly and with control to an unannounced signal.
- Handle the frustration of missing a spoon with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Decks of playing cards: 5
- Plastic spoons: 20
- Cones: 5
Teacher tip
Use plastic spoons and keep cones away from desks. Passing starts slowly, so encourage the dealer to speed up gradually.
