Sponge Bucket Relay Challenge

Each team carries water with sponges from a full bucket to its empty bucket 25 yards away in a continuous relay, and the first to reach the fill line wins. Students build aerobic endurance in a team challenge that is perfect for hot days.

How to play

  1. For each team of five, place a full bucket of water at the start and an empty bucket with a marker line halfway up 25 yards away (3 min).
  2. Each team has two sponges: two runners go at once, soak the sponge, run to the empty bucket, squeeze it out and run back to hand it off.
  3. The relay never stops: whoever receives the sponge goes right away. Nobody waits more than one turn.
  4. Play 6 minutes or until a team reaches its line. Check the buckets every 2 minutes and announce the standings (6 min).
  5. Walk 2 minutes. Second round carrying the sponge on top of the head on the way out, touching it only to fix it (5 min).
  6. Clean up and discuss which strategy worked (2 min).
