Sound Seekers: Find the Hidden Timers
In pairs, a blindfolded seeker and a spotter track down kitchen timers hidden around the gym that go off at different times. Students practice careful listening, locating sounds, and looking out for a partner.
How to play
- With the class facing the wall, the teacher hides 6 wind-up timers under mats or behind cones, set to ring between minutes 1 and 4. Form 5 teams made up of pairs.
- While nothing is ringing, everyone waits silently at their team base; some timers tick and can be heard up close.
- When one rings, everyone freezes for 3 seconds and points toward the sound. Then the blindfolded seeker walks toward it with the spotter one step behind.
- The first pair to touch the timer turns it off, scores a point for their team, and returns it to the teacher. The others return to base.
- Each round takes about 4 minutes; then partners switch roles and the teacher hides the timers again. Play four rounds.
Rules
- Always walk; running toward the sound is not allowed.
- The spotter stays one step away and says "stop" at any obstacle.
- Timers are touched, not grabbed on the run or thrown.
- Total silence between rings.
Variations
Easier
Seekers keep their eyes open and timers are hidden in plain sight.
Standard
Blindfolded seeker with a spotter and six hidden timers.
Harder
Two timers ring almost at once and each team must choose which one to go after.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hide timers in accessible spots; a student who uses a wheelchair can be the seeker while the spotter pushes.
- Visual impairment: the student plays without a blindfold on equal terms or helps the teacher hide the timers.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: warn that timers will ring and offer the spotter or scorekeeper role.
Learning goals
- Locate where a sound comes from in a large space.
- Move safely without vision.
- Protect and support a partner who cannot see.
Equipment for a class of 25
- kitchen timers: 6
- blindfolds: 13

Teacher tip
Use inexpensive mechanical timers, which tick and ring loudly. Make sure none are hidden near walls or hazardous corners.
