Sound Corners: Walk to the Instrument
Four musicians with different instruments stand in the corners of the gym; when one plays, blindfolded walkers must reach that corner while classmates keep them safe. Students practice sound discrimination, orientation, and responsibility.
How to play
- Place a musician in each corner: hand drum, castanets, jingle bells, and rhythm sticks. Each plays 3 times while the class watches to learn the sounds (2 minutes).
- Split the rest into 10 blindfolded walkers in the center and 11 "angels" spread out to stop anyone about to bump into something.
- The teacher silently points to a musician, who plays for 10 seconds. Walkers move slowly, hands up like bumpers, toward that corner.
- When the sound stops, everyone freezes and removes the blindfold: anyone in the correct half earns a point. After 5 sounds (about 3 minutes), roles and musicians switch.
- In the last rounds, two instruments play at once and the teacher says which to follow. Finish when everyone has had all three roles.
Rules
- Walkers always walk with hands out front.
- Angels stop a walker with a gentle shoulder tap and the word "stop."
- Musicians play only when the teacher points to them.
- Anyone who feels unsafe may remove the blindfold.
Variations
Easier
Two instruments in opposite corners and a first round with eyes open.
Standard
Four instruments, one per corner, with blindfolded walkers.
Harder
Each instrument also calls a way to move, such as tiptoe or backward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair moves with an angel who pushes or spots, or serves as a musician or director.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the student plays without a blindfold, following a visual signal from the musician, or is an angel or director.
- Skill level: advanced students must end up inside a hoop in the corner.
Learning goals
- Distinguish sounds and locate their source.
- Adjust movement to auditory information.
- Keep classmates who cannot see safe.

Teacher tip
The more different the instruments sound, the better, so test your gym's echo first. With a restless group, start with five walkers.
