Sort-and-Score Recycling Relay
A target relay where each student runs with a piece of trash, decides which recycling bin it belongs in, and tosses it into the right box from a line. It builds tossing accuracy, quick decision-making, and environmental awareness.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 in lines behind a cone. At 33 feet, each team has 2 cardboard boxes, one labeled with blue cardstock (paper) and one with yellow (plastic), and a throwing line 6 feet from them (3 min).
- Next to each line is a hoop with mixed trash: crumpled newspaper balls and empty plastic bottles with caps on.
- On the signal, the first student grabs an item, runs to the line, picks a bin, and tosses. They run back and high-five the next teammate.
- Correct bin, 2 points; wrong bin, 0, and it gets pulled out at the end. Rounds last 3 min, moving the line back 18 inches each round (12 min).
- At the end, each team checks its boxes and explains one item they were unsure about (2 min).
Rules
- Always toss from behind the line; never drop items in by hand.
- Bottles are tossed underhand with caps screwed on.
- Return along the side of the line so you do not collide with the next runner.
Variations
Easier
Line 3 feet from the boxes, with only very obvious paper and plastic items.
Standard
Line at 6 feet, two bins, and 3-min rounds.
Harder
Add a third green box for glass using painted plastic bottles, with a line at 10 feet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student walks or wheels the course and tosses from 3 feet.
- Hearing impairment: start each round by dropping a raised pinnie as well as blowing the whistle.
- Fitness level: students who need a rest act as bin judge for one round.
Learning goals
- Toss objects of different shapes and weights accurately.
- Make quick, correct decisions during play.
- Value sorting recyclables as a responsible habit.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Ask families to send small, clean bottles a few days ahead. Light items drift, so teach a higher arc for paper and a firmer toss for bottles.
