Song Map Choreography: Verse, Chorus and Bridge

The class maps out the structure of a current song and builds a whole-class dance: the chorus is the same for everyone, each group creates its own verse, and the bridge ripples in canon from group to group. Students work on linking song structure to choreography and whole-class cooperation.

How to play

  1. Listen to the song with the class and draw its map on butcher paper: intro, verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, bridge, and final chorus (3 minutes).
  2. Teach or vote on a shared 16-count chorus with 4 clear moves that everyone will dance in unison (5 minutes).
  3. Form 5 groups of 5. Assign each group part of the verses; they create 16 counts that match the feel of that section (6 minutes).
  4. The bridge is done in canon: each group dances the same 8-count block, starting 2 counts after the group before (4 minutes).
  5. Full run-through of the whole song with groups spread out in the space; each group knows when to dance and when to hold a pose (6 minutes).
  6. Final whole-class performance (2 minutes) and a quick discussion of which part came across most clearly (2 minutes).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Each group dances one verse plus the chorus, with no canon bridge.

Standard

The full song with a shared chorus, group verses, and a canon bridge.

Harder

In the final chorus each group faces a different direction, and everyone ends in one big circle.

Teacher tip

Pick a song with a very clear structure and clean lyrics; check it before class. Posting the song map on the wall during rehearsal stops the constant "who's up now?" question.
