Soccer Bowling
A bowling game where students knock down bottles by passing the ball along the ground with the inside of the foot, rotating roles as kicker, pin setter, ball fetcher, and scorekeeper. It builds eye-foot coordination, inside-of-the-foot passing, and accuracy.
How to play
- Make 6 groups of 4. Each group sets 6 bottles with a little sand in a triangle and marks a kicking line with two cones about 15 feet away, with 12 feet between lanes (3 min).
- Technique: plant foot beside the ball pointing at the bottles, ankle locked, strike with the inside of the foot, and follow through to the target. Five practice kicks at a single bottle (3 min).
- Game: two kicks per turn, counting bottles knocked down; all of them on the first kick is a 10-point "strike." While one student kicks, one resets, one fetches the ball, and one keeps score, rotating every turn (8 min).
- Second game: move the line back to about 20 feet, and the second kick is with the non-dominant foot (5 min).
- Tally the points and put equipment away in order (1 min).
Rules
- Keep the ball on the ground; balls in the air don't count.
- The pin setter enters only when the ball has stopped, and nobody stands behind the bottles.
- Kick from behind the cone line.
Variations
Easier
Set the line at 10 feet, bunch the bottles closer, and allow pushing the ball.
Standard
Play at 15 feet with six bottles, two kicks per turn, and rotating roles.
Harder
Play at 25 feet, kicking a moving ball after a 10-foot dribble with the non-dominant foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: send the ball with a boccia ramp, a hand push, or a pool noodle from the same line.
- Blind or low vision: a partner claps behind the bottles before each kick.
- Fitness and skill level: each student picks a line at 10, 15, or 20 feet, and points count the same.
Learning goals
- Pass the ball with the inside of the foot toward a target.
- Place the plant foot correctly beside the ball.
- Take on game roles responsibly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 6
- recycled bottles: 36
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Put a little sand in the bottles so the wind doesn't knock them over, but not so much they won't fall. Focus corrections on the plant foot: almost every off-target kick starts there.
