Sneaky Commandos: Crawl to the Flag
Two teams of commandos cross a zone of low obstacles by crawling to steal the lookout's flag without being seen moving. Students practice crawling, freezing instantly, body control, and team strategy to advance without being spotted.
How to play
- A 50-foot field: start line on one side; at the far end, the lookout faces away with a flag behind them. In between, trenches of mats and benches. Two teams of 12 take turns.
- While the lookout faces away, the team advances by crawling or on all fours low to the ground. You may stand only behind a bench.
- When the lookout turns around (every 3 to 6 seconds, at their own pace), everyone must freeze flat on the floor. Anyone seen moving is named and goes back to the start, with no elimination.
- The team scores when someone grabs the flag and crawls back to a trench without the lookout seeing it; the lookout doesn't know who has it and may guess once.
- Each attempt lasts about 2 minutes; then the other team plays. Change the lookout every attempt (6 attempts, 12 min).
- Before each turn, the team has 30 seconds to decide who are decoys and who goes for the flag. Wrap-up (2 min) with the score.
Rules
- Crawling is required outside the trenches; anyone standing in the open goes back to the start.
- Safety: nobody crawls over a teammate or pushes to get ahead.
- The lookout must name the person before pointing; "somebody" doesn't count.
- Go under the benches one at a time.
Variations
Easier
A 30-foot field, and the lookout waits at least 6 seconds before turning.
Standard
A 50-foot field with trenches, decoys, and one guess for the lookout.
Harder
Two lookouts who turn independently and two flags.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: moves lying on a scooter board or in a wheelchair, freezing when the lookout turns; can also be the lookout.
- Visual impairment: plays lookout, listening instead of looking and naming anyone they hear moving.
- Lower fitness: starts from midfield.
Learning goals
- Crawl with control and freeze on the spot.
- Build a team strategy of decoys and advances.
- Respect the lookout's calls and the rules of the game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flags (bandanas): 2
- mats: 8
- cones: 6
- benches: 4
Teacher tip
Remind the class it is a game of patience, not speed: if it becomes a race, add more open zones where crawling is required. Check that the benches are stable and upright.
