Snails and Horses Drum Game
The tambourine sets the speed: slow beats are snails moving very slowly, fast beats are trotting horses. Bit by bit the drum speeds up and slows down, and so do the kids. They work on time awareness: fast, slow, speeding up and slowing down.
How to play
- Everyone spreads out in the gym. Play slow beats and show them: “This is the snail,” walking low and very slowly. Play fast: “This is the horse,” trotting with high knees (1 min).
- Switch between slow and fast every 20 seconds. Kids change animals when they hear the change, without you saying it (3 min).
- Total silence: “Freeze!” They hold still as the animal they were until the drum starts again (2 min).
- Now speed up gradually, from very slow to very fast: the snail turns into a horse without stopping. Then slow down gently back to the snail (3 min).
- One child plays the tambourine and chooses slow or fast; help them keep the beat. Switch drummers every 30 seconds (3 min).
Rules
- Horses trot without bumping: look for open space.
- When the tambourine goes quiet, everyone freezes.
- Each child moves at their own pace within the beat.
- Play the tambourine with your hand, never hit anyone with it.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just two very different speeds plus freeze.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add gradual speeding up and slowing down.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, add a third animal at medium speed, like a walking dog.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do snails and horses with the arms, or by moving the wheelchair slower or faster.
- Hearing: pair the beats with a big arm gesture and have the child stand where they can see the tambourine.
- Skill level: kids who've got it can be the drummer; easily distracted kids can hold a buddy's hand.
Learning goals
- Tell slow and fast apart by listening to a beat.
- Match movement speed to a sound cue.
- Notice gradual changes: speeding up and slowing down.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
Really exaggerate the contrast between slow and fast at first. Keep horse rounds short so kids don't get too wound up.
