Slow Figure-Eight on a Bike in a Shrinking Box
In a closed schoolyard, each rider traces slow figure-eights inside a box that keeps shrinking, without touching the line or putting a foot down. It builds low-speed balance, steering and eye control, the basis for maneuvering in traffic.
How to play
- Quick bike check (air, brakes, chain) and helmet fit check (3 min).
- Wide figure-eight in a 10 x 5 m box: pedal gently, looking toward the exit of the turn, not at the wheel (5 min).
- Shrink the box to 8 x 4 m and then to 6 x 3 m; control speed by feathering the rear brake (7 min).
- Challenge in groups of three: three figure-eights in a row without touching the line or putting a foot down; partners count errors, then the bike rotates (6 min).
- Discussion: the role of your eyes, the rear brake and the outside knee in the turn (4 min).
Rules
- Helmet buckled any time you are on the bike.
- Only one rider inside each box.
- Partners wait outside, 6 feet from the line.
- The schoolyard is closed to other groups during the lesson.
Variations
Easier
Use only the large box and allow one foot down per figure-eight.
Standard
Figure-eights in a box shrinking from 10 x 5 m to 6 x 3 m, with a final challenge.
Harder
Ride figure-eights in a 5 x 2.5 m box with one hand on the bars for half the loop.
Adaptations
- Low vision: lines are marked with bright cones as well as chalk.
- Nervous riders: start with the seat lowered so both feet reach the ground easily.
- Limited mobility: rides the same course with a handcycle or sports wheelchair if available; otherwise judges errors.
Learning goals
- Keep balance on a bike at very low speed.
- Coordinate eyes, steering and brakes in tight turns.
- Track progress with a clear error criterion.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bikes: 10
- helmets: 10
- cones: 24
- chalk: 3
Teacher tip
If there are not enough bikes, ask the local police or city hall (many run bike safety programs with loaner bikes) or a cycling club, or let students bring their own with parent permission; with 10 bikes, work in groups of three that rotate. With no bikes at all, walk the figure-eight holding a hoop as handlebars to work on eyes and line.
