Sleep Traffic Light: Intervals Matched to Rest
An interval workout where each student sets intensity based on how they slept: they rate sleep hours and quality, put on a green, yellow, or red pinnie, and run in the matching lane. It builds training self-regulation and links rest to performance.
How to play
- Each student silently answers: hours slept (more than 8, 6 to 8, fewer than 6) and quality from 1 to 5. Using the teacher's chart, they pick green, yellow, or red (3 min).
- Three parallel cone lanes: green 150 m, yellow 120 m, red 80 m, each to be covered in 40 seconds. Easy 3-minute warm-up.
- Set 1: 6 reps of 40 seconds running and 40 seconds walking back (8 min).
- Students rate effort from 1 to 10: green above 8 drops to yellow, red below 4 may move up. 2-minute break.
- Set 2: another 6 reps in the adjusted lane (8 min).
- Wrap-up (1 min): did effort match sleep? Tips for protecting sleep during finals.
Rules
- Pinnie color is personal; nobody comments on it.
- Run in your own lane and pass on the left.
- Safety: if dizzy or very sleepy, walk and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
One set with shorter lanes.
Standard
Two sets of 6 reps with lanes of 150, 120, and 80 meters.
Harder
A third set, with lane changes based on pulse after each rep.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: intervals in a wheelchair with the same color system.
- Hearing impairment: arm-drop starts and a visible stopwatch.
- Fitness level: adjust distances to the group while keeping clear gaps between colors.
Learning goals
- Assess one's own sleep quality before training.
- Match intensity to recovery state.
- Connect sleep, performance, and perceived effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored pinnies: 25
- cones: 12
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Explain that one short night is not a failure but useful information for training smart. Space lanes at least 3 m (10 ft) apart.
