Sleep Thieves: Guard Your Hours
A steal-the-treasure game where each team guards its «hours of sleep», and thief cards (late screens, caffeinated drinks, late dinners) or protector cards (a routine, phone outside the room) change the rules. Students learn what helps and what hurts rest.
How to play
- Setup: four teams, each with a bed (hoop) in its corner holding 9 beanbags, its «hours». You may steal one beanbag per trip; if you are tagged in enemy territory, go home empty-handed (3 min).
- Round 1 with no cards to learn the game (4 min).
- Rounds 2 and 3: each team draws a card. Thieves: «late-night screens» (one player short for the first minute), «caffeinated drink» (too jittery to defend near your bed), «late dinner» (walking only for the first 20 seconds). Protectors: «regular bedtime» (one extra defender), «phone out of the bedroom» (steal two beanbags per trip), «dark room» (double safe zone). Count hours after each round (8 min).
- Quick talk: what sleep thieves do you know? Teens are advised to sleep 8 to 10 hours (3 min).
- Final round: each team picks any protector card (4 min).
- Count and pledge: each team names one protector it will try this week (3 min).
Rules
- Tag gently on the back or shoulder.
- Take one beanbag at a time (unless a card says otherwise), and never throw them.
- No guarding the bed by standing inside the hoop.
- Card effects are followed without arguing.
Variations
Easier
Small field and no thief cards.
Standard
Thief and protector cards.
Harder
Draw two cards each round, and the team decides which protector cancels which thief.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: guards the bed and tags anyone who enters a cone circle around it.
- Visual impairment: attacks holding hands with a sighted guide; on defense, teammates clap to warn of incoming raiders.
- Students stressed by contact or competition: can be the «clock» who counts hours and reads the cards.
Learning goals
- Sustain high-intensity play with decision-making.
- Identify habits that help or hurt sleep.
- Cooperate on defensive and offensive strategy.
Equipment for a class of 25

- pinnies: 28
- thief and protector cards: 12

Teacher tip
Mark four quadrants with cones so every team's territory is clear. Do not ask what time students go to bed: talk about the thieves in general.
