Slackline Challenge Ladder with Peer Assessment
For students who can already take a few steps on the low slackline: a sheet with eight challenges of increasing difficulty, each passed when a peer observer validates the attempt against clear criteria. Everyone moves at their own pace and records their level for the next session.
How to play
- Review safety and the setup, and read the sheet: eight challenges, from walking 3 m to turning, sitting down or passing a partner (3 min).
- Explain the validation criteria: eyes forward, no grabbing, three seconds of control at the end of the challenge (2 min).
- In groups of three per line: one attempts the challenge, one spots and the third observes and signs off on the sheet; rotate after each attempt (18 min).
- Each student marks the highest validated challenge and writes down a technique tip from the observer (4 min).
- Quick share-out on which criterion was hardest to meet (3 min).
Rules
- The line stays at knee height at most, with mats underneath.
- Every challenge is attempted with a spotter ready alongside.
- Do not move to the next challenge until the previous one is validated.
- Observers validate based on the sheet's criteria, not friendship.
Variations
Easier
The sheet starts with static challenges and has only four steps.
Standard
Eight progressive challenges validated by a peer observer.
Harder
Add challenges that involve tossing and catching a ball on the line.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the sheet includes drawings of each challenge and validation is given with a thumbs-up.
- Autism: sees the sheet in the previous session and keeps the same group.
- Ankle injury: serves as observer and coach, providing written technique feedback.
Learning goals
- Progress in dynamic balance with graded challenges.
- Observe and assess another person's performance using objective criteria.
- Self-regulate learning and record the level reached.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Keep the sheets: they show progress across sessions and work as an assessment tool. Pay close attention to the turning and passing challenges.
