Skip-Count Long Rope
In groups of five with a long jump rope, the jumper skip-counts out loud by twos, threes, or fives, and on a set multiple they exit and the next jumper runs in. Students practice coordination, rhythm, and multiplication facts.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 with one long rope each, spaced at least 12 feet apart. Two students turn and three wait in line to one side (2 min).
- Rope warm-up: each jumper runs in, does 5 jumps in a row, and exits the far side. The turners count out loud (2 min).
- Add counting by 2s: the jumper says 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 on each jump. On 10, they run out and the next jumper enters and continues 12, 14, and so on up to 30 (3 min).
- Switch facts: count by 5s to 50, exiting on each multiple of 25, and by 3s to 30, exiting at 15 (4 min).
- If the rope stops, the group restarts from the last number said correctly, not from zero.
- Rotate turners every 2 minutes. Final challenge: the group tries to reach the highest number possible without stopping the rope (4 min).
Rules
- Enter when the rope comes down in front of you, never from behind a turner.
- Turners swing with their whole arm at a steady pace, no yanking.
- Groups keep their distance so ropes do not hit anyone.
- Students waiting in line count out loud to help the jumper.
Variations
Easier
Swing the rope back and forth without turning it over and count by 2s and 10s.
Standard
Turning rope counting by 2s, 3s, and 5s with a jumper switch on a multiple.
Harder
Count by 4s, 6s, or 7s, or count down from 50 by fives.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: turn from a fixed spot or serve as the official counter and show the number with their fingers.
- Students with autism or math difficulties: post a card with the counting sequence next to the rope.
- Fitness level: students who want more challenge do two jumps per number; students who tire take shorter turns.
Learning goals
- Jump a long rope, entering and exiting on rhythm.
- Skip-count by multiples automatically.
- Coordinate with the group to keep the rope moving.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Many kids cannot run into a turning rope yet: start with a swinging rope and teach them to enter as the rope passes in front. If a group is stuck on entries, let the jumper start inside the rope.
