Silly Mix-Up Fashion Show
In pairs, a stylist runs to the wardrobe and dresses their model by putting each item on the body part shown on a card, like a hat on the knee or a sock on the hand. Then the model walks the runway, showing and naming those body parts.
How to play
- Set 4 cardboard boxes with assorted clothing (hats, big socks, scarves, gloves, old T-shirts) at one end of the gym and a stack of cards face down in the middle (setup).
- Form pairs: stylist and model. Pairs stand 30 feet from the boxes, on the opposite side (2 min).
- The stylist turns over a card, for example sock on the elbow, runs to a box, grabs the item and comes back to place it loosely on that body part (6 min).
- After three cards, the model walks the runway, a 25-foot line, stopping to point to and name each dressed body part out loud (3 min).
- The pair runs the clothes back to the box and switches roles (6 min).
- Final round: all models walk the runway together, copying the walk the teacher calls out: on tiptoes, on heels or with giant steps (3 min).
Rules
- No item goes over the face or tight around the neck.
- Run to the boxes on the right side and come back on the left so no one collides.
- The model can help hold the item but the stylist puts it on.
- All clothes go back in the box before drawing a new card.
Variations
Easier
Cards show a picture of the clothing item and the body part.
Standard
Cards have words only, read by the stylist or the teacher.
Harder
Each card lists two items and two body parts, or includes left and right.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can be the stylist giving directions or a seated model while the partner runs.
- For students with visual impairments, use clothes with very different textures and have the model touch and name each dressed body part.
- To raise the physical challenge, move the boxes to 45 feet or have the stylist jump with feet together.
Learning goals
- Identify and name less familiar body parts such as elbow, ankle, wrist and knee.
- Move quickly to complete a partner task.
- Express oneself with the body while walking the runway for the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- assorted clothing items: 40
- cards: 30
- cardboard boxes: 4
Teacher tip
Ask families for clean old clothes for the boxes and check for long drawstrings; the fashion show works best with background music and applause for every model.
