Silent Session: Lead with Gestures Only
Taking turns, one student leads their group through a block of exercises without saying a word, using only gestures, demos, a whistle, and equipment placement. Students practice nonverbal leadership, observation, and efficient group management.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5, each with 4 cones, 4 hoops, and a whistle in their area (1 min).
- Agree as a class on 4 whistle-and-gesture signals: one long blast to stop, two short to switch exercises, hand up to gather, and clapping to speed up (2 min).
- Each leader has 3 minutes to silently lead three exercises with the cones and hoops (footwork, jumps, coordination), arranging the group in a line, circle, or pairs using gestures only.
- After each turn, the group takes 30 seconds to say which gesture was clearest and which caused confusion.
- Rotate leaders until four students have led (14 min). Finish by discussing which no-voice tools are worth using in regular sessions too (1 min).
Rules
- The leader can't talk or write, and the group stays silent during the block.
- If the group doesn't get it, the leader demonstrates again rather than explaining.
- Safety: jumps go only over hoops lying flat on the floor, never over cones.
- The whole group must be moving at least two out of every three minutes.
Variations
Easier
The leader can use a whiteboard with sketches to introduce each exercise.
Standard
Three exercises in silence using the agreed signal code.
Harder
The leader must also form pairs and change the group formation twice without speaking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: leads seated using arms, the whistle, and a helper who places equipment.
- Hearing impairment: a great fit; the code is built on visible gestures and the whistle always comes with a signal.
- Lower fitness: picks moderate-intensity exercises for their block.
Learning goals
- Lead a group using clear nonverbal cues.
- Organize the group into different formations quickly.
- Watch closely to read the leader's signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- whistles: 5
- hoops: 20
Teacher tip
This activity shows how much leaders over-talk. With permission, record a turn or two and show it later as an example of a clear demo.
