Silent Movie: Scenes With Title Cards
Groups create a short silent movie in the style of early cinema, with big gestures and title cards showing the key lines. It works on storytelling with the body, controlled exaggeration, and teamwork.
How to play
- The teacher explains how silent films told stories: big gestures, clear expressions, and cards with short lines between scenes. The whole class tries surprise, anger, and joy at once (4 min).
- Groups of 5 pick a simple plot (the stolen cake, the train that leaves, the date that goes wrong) and write three cards: beginning, problem, and ending (6 min).
- Rehearse the movie, 90 seconds max. One person holds and changes the cards and the others act; the role can rotate (10 min).
- Premiere: each group screens its movie for the class. If you like, add clapping or instrumental music without lyrics at low volume (8 min).
- Debrief: which gestures made sense without a card and which needed the text (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody talks during the movie: all lines go on the cards.
- Chases and falls are done in slow motion with no contact.
- Everyone in the group appears on screen at least once.
- The audience applauds every premiere.
Variations
Easier
Plot given by the teacher and two cards.
Standard
Plot chosen by the group and three cards.
Harder
Add a camera effect: a fast-motion moment or a close-up where only one person moves.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the group describes its scene beforehand and someone quietly narrates the other premieres; they can act with a partner guide.
- Hearing impairment: the activity is silent and visual; give instructions in writing.
- Shy students: they can hold the cards or play a minor character with few actions.
Learning goals
- Tell a complete story with the body.
- Exaggerate gestures without losing clarity.
- Organize and share out roles within a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- poster boards: 18
- markers: 6
Teacher tip
If you don't have poster board, use printer paper with very large letters. The usual mistake is writing too much: six words max per card.
