Silent Hand Hypnosis Partners
A silent drama game: one partner leads with the palm of a hand and the other keeps their face the same distance away at all times, following it through space at different levels and speeds. Students develop body control, focus, trust, and responsibility for a partner.
How to play
- Push desks aside, make pairs, and play calm instrumental music. A holds an open palm about 10 in from B's face, as if an invisible thread connects them (1 min).
- Round 1: A moves the hand slowly up, down, and sideways without traveling; B follows. Switch roles after 90 seconds (3 min).
- Round 2: A leads through the room with level changes: on tiptoe, squatting, turning. All in silence; switch after 2 minutes (4 min).
- Round 3 in threes: one student leads two classmates, one with each hand, without letting them bump. Rotate roles every 90 seconds (4.5 min).
- Seated wrap-up: which role students liked best and what makes a leader trustworthy (2.5 min).
Rules
- Total silence: communicate only with the hand.
- The leader is responsible for the partner: slow moves, no bumps, no forced positions.
- Nobody squats lower than feels comfortable.
Variations
Easier
Hand movements only, no traveling, at about 16 in.
Standard
Pairs with traveling and level changes, then groups of three.
Harder
The whole class in a chain: each student follows one hand and leads the next person.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes part in a wheelchair, as leader or follower, within a comfortable range.
- Visual impairment: the leader's fingertips rest on the back of the partner's hand.
- Autism or shyness: start with the teacher as partner, or as the leader, which feels safer.
Learning goals
- Control the body while keeping a constant distance.
- Lead another person safely and responsibly.
- Communicate without words through movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Music: 1
Teacher tip
This classic theater exercise from Augusto Boal is often called Colombian Hypnosis; present it as a focus game, not a contest. Stop the round if someone speeds up or steers a partner toward desks or walls.
