Side Shuffle Beanbag Transfer Race
Partners face each other, and each one moves beanbags from one hoop to another 4 yards away using only side shuffles, racing the partner who mirrors them. Students work on lateral agility, braking and a low defensive stance.
How to play
- For each pair, place two hoops 4 yards apart in a line for each student; the two students face each other 3 yards apart. Put five beanbags in each student's left hoop (3 min).
- Ready stance: feet wide, knees bent and weight on the balls of the feet. Move sideways without crossing the feet.
- On the signal, each student bends at the knees to pick up a beanbag, shuffles across and sets it in the other hoop. Go back for the next until all five are moved.
- The first with all five in the far hoop, back in the ready stance, wins. Rest 30 seconds and repeat the other way. Six duels switching opponents (8 min).
- Final mirror round: one student moves freely between the hoops and the other copies; on a clap, both move one beanbag (3 min).
- Inner thigh and calf stretches (2 min).
Rules
- If your feet cross, that beanbag goes back to the starting hoop.
- Set beanbags in the hoop; never toss them.
- Pairs are 3 yards apart on each side.
- Look at your partner across from you, not at the floor.
Variations
Easier
Hoops 3 yards apart and three beanbags.
Standard
Hoops 4 yards apart, five beanbags and duels both ways.
Harder
Hoops 5 yards apart, or touch the floor with a hand at each hoop before picking up a beanbag.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, move 2 yards with wheel turns and pick beanbags up from a bench.
- Visual impairment: mark the hoops with tall cones and have a partner count the remaining beanbags out loud.
- Lower fitness: race their own time and do four duels.
Learning goals
- Improve fast, balanced side-to-side movement.
- Stay low when braking and bending down.
- Compete with good sportsmanship in short duels.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beanbags: 130
- hoops: 52
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is turning and running forward, so remind students their chest always faces the opponent. Set up the hoops ahead of time so switching opponents is quick.
